There’s an old proverb, “When is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. When is the second best time? Now.” In other words, it’s never too late. And with landscape lighting, it’s almost never too early. In the best of all possible scenarios for new construction, a landscape lighting designer is retained during the planning and designing stage of the house, before the builder gives you the bid for the cost to build the house, so a lighting plan can be included in the total price. If not, the next best scenario is to have the outdoor lighting designer in place before the electrician pre-wires for outlets and switches to advise about where the outside outlets should be in order to facilitate the installation of outdoor lighting and lower costs.
Ideally, preparation should take place before concrete is poured, in case lighting would be placed on the other side of the concrete. Installation should begin when the irrigation is being installed, so the landscape lighting technician can lay their cables in the trenches dug by the irrigation team. The lighting installation is best completed when the plants are in place but prior to mulch installation, which creates much less mess, while adjustments to the plants and/or lights are still easy.
But what if I’ve already built my house? Is it too late for me? Of course not! We can absolutely install landscape lighting any time, and truth be told, the bulk of our work is on already existing homes.
