If you are fortunate enough to have a water feature in your yard, you already know what a peaceful atmosphere it creates, how relaxing the sound of water is, and how much beauty a water feature adds to your home, especially when the water sparkles and jumps with reflected sunlight. But that all goes away when the sun goes down. In order to maximize your water’s enjoyment factor, lighting is a must. With a quality lighting system, your waterfalls will sparkle, pond surfaces will shimmer and fountains will become a focal point in your yard.
What are the main techniques used to light a water feature?
Downlighting
Downlighting provides a natural, subtle and diffused light to simulate Mother Nature. We incorporate this lighting technique whenever we can (and not just with water features!). We mount the light fixtures high up within a nearby tree so as to softly illuminate your pond and create the enticing shadow effects of leaves and branches dancing over and around the pond. These lights are long-lasting, easy to maintain and provide a beautiful effect, with no harsh glare.
Uplighting
Uplighting can be pointed up into foliage alongside a pond, or across the water’s surface, or at a waterfall. For a double return, when you uplight something alongside your pond, the water will reflect that light as well. Uplighting also works well to highlight other landscaping around your pond. These lights are also very long-lasting and easily maintained.
Submersible Lights
Last but not least, submersible pond lights are another great option to light a water feature. Here, the lights are installed underwater and angled to shine up through the water, showcasing the movement of the water. The lights are best for ponds with a wide waterfall or one with multiple tiers, or large fountains with several bowls. These lights require more maintenance than downlights or uplights because they are located in the water. Algae can build up on the lens, or water can sneak in and destroy the lamp or fixture, therefore, you must use only quality fixtures here. You will need to keep the water clean, because submersed lights will show off everything in the water – good and bad.
There are many other techniques available, depending on your pond or water feature’s unique characteristics. We welcome the chance to help you add lighting to your water feature so it can be a focal point day or night.
