Old-school halogen and incandescent bulbs use filaments. When the filament breaks or burns out, the bulb no longer works. Remember shaking them to hear if the filament had broken? If it was broken, then you replaced the bulb. Easy-peasy. And it happens often, so you learn to keep some on hand. LED lights are very different. Take them apart and they look very much like the inside of your smartphone—very tech-y and electronic-y with circuit boards and the like. (But you can’t use them to watch videos of cats on YouTube . . . yet.) The electronic complexity is part of why they cost more than an incandescent bulb. It’s also why they don’t overheat and last so much longer than traditional bulbs.
So why are my LED lights not working? Generally, a short circuit in a single fixture leads to a single light or group of lights not working. The major offender is moisture. Quality products installed properly protect against this problem, but it does still happen from time to time. Troubleshooting is no longer simply a matter of replacing the burned out bulb(s). It requires determining which fixture’s circuits no longer work and why. There may also be issues with the connections or the transformer.
