If you’re thinking you might want to get yourself some outdoor lighting, the thought “How many landscape lights will I need” has probably crossed your mind. After all, if you’re going to do the job, you’ll want it to look good. Otherwise, what’s the point? For most of us, budget is a concern, and the number and kind of fixtures has an awful lot to do with the cost of the project.
While it would be great to be able to say that we have a formula like “X feet of house / 8 feet per fixture = number of fixtures,” it just doesn’t work like that. Lighting design is part art, part science. It depends on your home’s architecture, what you want to highlight, the existing landscape, any focal points or sculptures you have, water features, etc. Rarely is a well-lit home just a series of fixtures aimed at the walls of the house. Your home would lack dimension; it would look odd, and cheaply done.
This is why our lighting designer would need to meet you at your home to take measurements, see the architecture of the home, note any existing fixtures or streetlights, see your existing landscaping and hardscaping, see any other features you might have, and to get a feel for what you want to accomplish with your lighting.
So when we say you’ll need to trust us and our design training to suggest the proper number of lights, you’re probably thinking, “Sure. They just want to sell me more lights so they make more money!” But no, it doesn’t work that way. With lighting, more is not necessarily better. Sometimes more is just too much, and it can range from simply unattractive, to annoying (glare) and up to potentially dangerous. And that’s not going to get us repeat customers, or referrals. That’s going to make people run screaming in the other direction. Okay, maybe not “screaming,” but they will certainly take their business elsewhere (and rightly so!).
Good lighting design takes into account many factors. There are some guidelines, but unfortunately no magic formula to answer the question “How many outdoor lights will I need?” You’ll need to let us come in and use our expertise to give you the right balance of light and shadow to bring you the safety, security, and serenity you are looking for. You’ll be so glad you did every time you pull up to your house at night and see your beautifully lit home.
