Pete Bryant is currently on the board of the AOLP where he and other experienced lighting professionals have gone through an intense 4 year course of advanced levels of specialized training in landscape lighting design.
This program and certification is the only one of its kind currently being offered. The purpose of the certification is to develop the discipline of lighting designers to analyze their work in peer group studies and through in-depth subject matter. All sessions are administered by a panel of select landscape lighting designers, each of whom offers a different reference point or personality style. This openness and style of presentation allows for optimum learning and encourages group interaction, which we consider very important in the growth process of each individual.
Design, or to be specific, landscape lighting design, is very subjective and cannot be tested upon easily. There are no set of rules to memorize, but there are a series of fundamental principles that are universally acknowledged to form the basis of “good and responsible” landscape lighting design. Therefore, this program insists each participant contributes photos of their work and requires thought, insight, and experience to draw from in order to not only convey what good lighting is designed, but the practicality of how you can take an ordinary property and transform it into something amazing.
The primary goal is to promote design excellence and to allow for the development of an individual’s own lighting design style. Southern Lights of NC’s intent is that each individual lighting designer or technician should learn and re-learn the proven concepts, so that progressive change is made in the thought process of an individual design.
What is the Purpose of this Certification?
First of all, knowledge is king. We believe the more tools we have in our toolbox, the better our lighting designs will be. Currently, our industry is facing several growing problems, which includes energy conservation, sky glow & light glare, and other regulatory concerns. If we are to grow our industry, then we must address these problems and incorporate measures to guarantee the future of outdoor lighting.
The Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) believes it is in their best interest to be proactive in our efforts by training its members in the practice of “good and responsible” landscape lighting design. The following bullet points highlight this programs purpose:
