Why is Pruning Necessary for Proper Tree Lighting?

One of the most magical lighting effects we can use is down lighting. It creates a glow that mimics the effect of a full moon, and highlights the structure of the tree. Uplighting is also a fantastic tool for showcasing trees. Here in North Carolina, we have so many beautiful trees, from crape myrtles, to magnolias to pin oaks to cherries to elms and of course dogwoods (our state flower). We all know that they look beautiful during the day, but when they are lit up at night, the effect can be amazing. The play of light and shadow makes the tree’s structure and beauty stand out in a way that daylight cannot duplicate.

The type and placement of lighting are obviously important to achieving the best effect of your lighting. But they are not the only factors. An important component to effective and beautiful tree lighting is the structure and appearance of the actual tree itself. Most trees will require some pruning to allow the light to shine down or up in an attractive manner. Not only is this not harmful to the tree when done right, it is usually helpful to the tree by thinning out some interior growth and shaping it, which allows the remaining branches to receive more sunlight. Pruning will give the tree a more attractive appearance during the day and allow the light shine upward to the top of the canopy, and and down for moonlight effect at night.

While our lighting technician has studied and been certified in outdoor lighting, we also have a landscape maintenance sister company that has been around for over twenty years. This background helps us know the proper way to prune your trees for their health as well as for the beauty of your lighting design.
