PROJECT SUMMARY
Southern Lights had the privilege of installing the lighting designs for this property along some of the best talent in the country. Southern Lights was 1 or three companies chosen work on this historic site. Taliesin West is a National Historic Landmark nestled in the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale, AZ. It is also the home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
Wright’s beloved winter home and the bustling headquarters of the Taliesin Fellowship, was established in 1937 and diligently handcrafted over many years into a world unto itself. Deeply connected to the desert from which it was forged, Taliesin West possesses an almost prehistoric grandeur. It was built and maintained almost entirely by Wright and his apprentices, making it among the most personal of the architect’s creations.
LIGHTING FOCUS
PHASE I of this lighting design and installation was to illuminate the front entrance trees and create an immediate backdrop of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture. The goal was to impress the foundation and board, including Frank Prozillo, the President, and Christopher Thompson with Studiolux, the designer enough to allow us to come back for PHASE II and implement additional outdoor lighting around the design studio’s campus and allow for more traffic and tours to be able to safely make their way through the tours and enjoy FLW’s architecture in the evening from a different perspective:
- Large Mature Trees
- Walkway for visitors
- Ambient Light
- Backdrop to Front Entrance
LOCATION
LIGHTING DESIGN
Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. The goal of this lighting design was to capture the natural essence of the national landmark by placing the directional spot lights along the natural area closest to the front entrance. Gaining interest and height in this area brought a lot of attention to the beauty of the desert landscape and enchanced the architecture that surrounded them.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. The Taliesin West property of Frank Lloyd Wright’s creation was met with a few hurdles:
- Extreme heat.
- Rattlesnakes, scorpions, spiders, and lots of cactus.
- Rocky soil, difficult trenching. No mechanical trenchers were allowed. All work must be completed delicately by hand.
- Any disturbance of the landscape, (rocks, boulders, plants, etc) must to placed back in their exact location to keep this landmark historically accurate.
