PROJECT SUMMARY

Main goal for these Irving Park residents was to highlight the unique features of their backyard. These clients spend a lot of time outdoors and wanted the ability to enjoy the space and money they invested in their backyard. During the design phase, Southern Lights provided the road map and detailed lighting designs for this client capturing this beautiful setting at night creating the most ideal landscape lighting scenes.

LIGHTING FOCUS

Opposite of our normal practice of highlighting the architecture first, we began with the landscaping by illuminating the putting green, stone walls, outdoor living areas, and perimeter lighting:

LOCATION

The lighting designs and installation for this project can be found tucked deep in the backyard of an Irving Park Home in Greensboro, NC 27408.

LIGHTING DESIGN

Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. The focus for this project was simple. Bring to life all the beautiful landscape features installed in this amazing backyard.

Our client really wanted to feel comfortable outside while playing on his putting green and entertaining guests. Enough light to see and play, but not too much that it would took away from the overall natural look and lighting design. Proper fixture selection and placement were necessary on this project due to the multiple viewing angles.

This client wanted the ability to control the lighting system and specifically the putting green area. Southern Lights provided them with an outdoor lighting dimmer switch. This dimmer switch, located right beside the putting green, allowed full control of the intensity of light. The spots lights used around the green are also fully adjustable, up/down and side to side depending on which hole is being used.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME

Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Getting light to the right places took some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location. These homeowners also had large dogs that were very friendly, but liked to dig so special attention was made in the placement of wire to avoid their dog runs and digging patterns.

Had the putting green not yet been built, Southern Lights would have loved to incorporate some lighting fixtures in the cups on the green highlighting the flags. With a lack of large mature trees near the putting green, our options for highlighting this area were limited. We ended up choosing adjustable spot lights to achieve the desired lighting effect that allowed for movement in the game. All of these spots were adjustable and turned out great.

The stone walls were already in place prior to beginning this project which meant we had some custom lighting installation needs to get our fixtures in place without disturbing the stone work.
