PROJECT SUMMARY
This beautifully landscaped estate was filled with opportunity to light. This home and property sits on the Grandover Golf Resort and sprawls out over several acres.
During the initial consultation with this client, we were given free reign to design the perfect LED lighting system for both the architecture and landscape. Having complete control over the space is a lighting designer’s dream.
During the design phase, Southern Lights provides the road map and detailed lighting designs for our clients, capturing beautiful settings at night, creating the most ideal landscape lighting effects.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FOCUS
Southern Lights focused on the home, garage, patio and pool deck first by highlighting the architectural elements with 100% LED lighting. After setting the backdrop of the structures, we moved into the landscape. With large spaces, there are large amounts of dark and unwelcoming areas that need attention. The circle drive was overly dark and our clients were having trouble with their guests driving off the driveway and into their landscape.
The front of the home sits off the road by a few hundred feet so we wanted to ensure the front landscape was illuminated correctly with our LED lighting to give balance to the homes width and size.
The backyard of this Sedgefield Country Club home was just as impressive as the front, maybe even more so. The clean lines of the pool and patio make you feel like you are in a retreat on vacation. The home’s extensive landscaping also helps to conceal and provide a privacy screen from the Golf Course. Highlighting some of the property’s tall evergreens with our LED lighting helped to give some depth perception to the lighting design.
Also important to the homeowners, was to ensure that the security lighting was consistent with the landscape lighting around the home. Southern Lights wants to provide enough for the space, but not too much where the effect is washed out and the drama is lost.
When talking with our clients, Southern Lights always tries to listen for what’s most important from our client’s perspective. In this case and in our company motto of (Safety. Security. SERENITY), All three of these focuses played an equal role in these lighting designs:
- Safety lighting was needed to address the elevation changes throughout the property and along the long winding driveway.
- Security lighting was needed to help illuminate a very dark back and side yard and keep intruders out.
- SERENITY lighting is always needed to give the space and property a clean and natural design during evening hours. Tying the function with the beauty is always our goal.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING DESIGN

The maturity of the landscape and the uniqueness of this home’s architecture allowed Southern Lights the ability to really get creative with the LED lighting system. We were able to utilize several different light fixtures and techniques to bring this large property to life. As we are developing this LED lighting system and design, we knew this property if not properly lit, could look very underwhelming.
Lots of effort went into selecting the correct fixtures and deciding on what trees/shrubs to highlight, and what areas to emphasize/de-emphasize. Southern Lights has the opportunity to work with a lot of amazing clients and this couple was no different. Their love for their home shined through in their appreciation for the beautifully illuminated LED landscape lighting on this property.
Adding outdoor landscape lighting and giving our client remote access through a smartphone made all the difference for their security lighting.
These clients realized early on that this property and landscape really needed the full attention of an expert landscape lighting designer. Allowing Southern Lights the ability to be creative with the lighting design and to have some freedom of fixture selection and location, proved to be a great decision.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Getting light to the right place takes some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location.
Normally budget is one of our biggest hurdles to overcome. This client really trusted Southern Lights to use the right number of fixtures to capture this property’s aesthetics and allowed us to place as many or few fixtures as necessary to properly illuminate the space.
This landscape is fairly mature, so keeping the plant material properly pruned will be an ongoing maintenance need for these clients to keep the lighting design in tact for years to come and to reduce unnatural shadows on the architecture.
