PROJECT SUMMARY
Southern Lights had the privilege of creating the lighting designs for this property and work with the client who was particularly interested in creating an outdoor living area that felt safe and highlighted this quaint space.
LIGHTING FOCUS
The brick work around the backyard perimeter was the first lighting design focus. Stretching the viewpoint at night allows the space to “breathe” and not feel as tight and claustrophobic. Next came the sculpture and water feature area. Correct placement and lamp wattage/beam angles were critical in this installation and lighting design. Flanking the patio were 4 beautiful European Hornbeam trees that we drew attention to with directional spots:

LIGHTING DESIGN
Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. Southern Lights utilized one of the basic landscape lighting design techniques of “grazing” to draw out and bring attention to the detail in the brick work. The main feature in this Intimate Irving Park Courtyard was the water feature and sculpture.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Small spaces generally come with small budgets. Although this was not a main concern for this client, we wanted to make sure we didn’t over light the space. Trying to utilize the correct fixture in the correct location to maximize the effect and budget is something that Southern Lights always tries to be mindful of:
- Try not to overwhelm the space with light, but highlight the unique features of this courtyard with enough light to bring the space to life.
- Routing the wire and install light fixtures in an existing brick wall and water feature can be tricky. Proper care was needed in order to drill through brick work and provide a solid seal for water.
