Even though this lighting design was simple, Southern Lights still spent time developing the layout and lighting design. During the design phase, Southern Lights provided the customer with additional lighting options that could be added onto down the road.
The goal with any outdoor lighting design is to capture the essence of the subject, (in this case, the home), for our clients, creating the most ideal landscape lighting effect.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FOCUS
The patio was definitely the main focus for this outdoor lighting system. Re-creating the beautiful dining experience this couple had just experienced at a local upscale restaurant was important.
When talking with our clients, Southern Lights always tries to listen for what’s most important from our client’s perspective. In this case and in our company motto of (Safety. Security. SERENITY), All three of these focuses played an equal role in these lighting designs:
- Safety lighting was needed to address the elevation changes at the front entrance.
- Security lighting was needed to help illuminate a very dark home and provide reflective lighting back onto the front yard.

Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. Adequate lighting with a lot of flexibility was Southern Lights main objective. There would be times where the lighting needs would require 100% intensity, and others where only a low level light was desired. For this reason, we installed an in-line dimmer switch that can allow the bistro lights to range in brightness levels.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Getting light to the right place takes some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location.
This project was designed to run on a 12v transformer instead of 120v. This meant that our clients could add on additional landscape lighting down the road into the existing infrastructure. Each strand of string lights needed to be custom cut to fit the space.
Southern Lights uses high-quality, commercial grade string lights unlike what homeowners can find in the big box stores or online. We custom cut our lines to the perfect length from long rolls to ensure we can create a clean design and install.
