PROJECT SUMMARY
This New Irving home sits far off this neighborhood street and has many trees shielding the full view of the home.
Even though this lighting design was simple, Southern Lights still spent time developing the layout and lighting design. During the design phase, Southern Lights provided the customer with additional lighting options that could be added onto down the road.
The goal with any outdoor lighting design is to capture the essence of the subject, (in this case, the home), for our clients, creating the most ideal landscape lighting effect.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FOCUS
The home’s architecture was always the main focus here although several trees in the front yard were also chosen to illuminate.
When talking with our clients, Southern Lights always tries to listen for what’s most important from our client’s perspective. In this case and in our company motto of (Safety. Security. SERENITY), All three of these focuses played an equal role in these lighting designs:
- Safety lighting was needed to address the elevation changes at the front entrance.
- Security lighting was needed to help illuminate a very dark home and provide reflective lighting back onto the front yard.
- SERENITY lighting is always needed to give the space and property a clean and natural design during evening hours.

As mentioned earlier, this property is somewhat concealed from the street so placing the right number of fixtures in the right location really was more important on this property to pull your eye through the trees and distant from the road.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Getting light to the right place takes some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location.
These clients did not want to utilize the traditional style path light along front walkway to ensure guest feel safe and can see where they are going. They were concerned about landscapers and hoses bumping or breaking them over time. Southern Lights discussed other options that would illuminate the brick paver walkway without causing them issues in the future. After a few conversations about fixtures, a tree light was selected that could be mounted above the lower canopy trees shining down onto walkway. This fixture allowed Southern Lights to illuminate walkway with fewer fixtures and also create a really cool effect.
The front porch of the home had a very welcoming presence, but created the need for an additional fixture to be mounted to the gutter to properly illuminated the soffits of the home providing consistent light across this New Irving Park’s architecture.
This client ultimately trusted Southern Lights with the lighting designs allowing us to provide them with the most ideal landscape lighting effect with the best lighting fixtures for the space and structures. We think it turned out pretty awesome.
