Greensboro Landscape Lighting: Good Lighting Gone Bad

landscape-lighting-services

We get calls and emails from property owners whose Greensboro landscape lighting systems (installed by someone else) no longer function. Generally, they are contacting us because the original installer either went out of business, just won’t return their calls now that there is a problem, or the homeowner no longer trusts the installer. When we receive calls like this, we do our best to repair the system. Sometimes that is not possible, and a whole system replacement is needed.

Frequently what leads to this situation is that the installer has used decent fixtures and an adequate transformer, but has failed to install everything properly.

When it comes to creating a quality outdoor lighting system, two things are involved – quality lighting products and proper installation. These two are highly interdependent, and having one without the other inevitably results in failure.

More often than not, the connections are the issue. There is a proper way to make connections: heat shrink connectors. They are created for this purpose and will keep moisture out better than another other method. Some folks use the regular yellow and red wire nuts. They are not designed for damp locations, and moisture will invade before you know it. Some folks “go the extra mile” and wrap those red and yellow nuts with electrical tape. This keeps the moisture out for just a little bit longer.  When moisture sneaks into the connections, it begins to corrode the wires. Then the lighting system starts to malfunction. In such cases, we would dig up every connection, cut off the corroded wire and reconnect everything properly.

Additionally, we also encounter overloaded transformers, poor quality fixtures, wrong gauge wire, and lots of other ways to cut costs. The client ends up spending the same or more money on their Greensboro landscape lighting system and its subsequent repairs (not to mention the hassle of downtime and repairs, and potential hazards of improperly installed lighting) than had they called us to start with. Outdoor lighting can add such beauty and safety when properly installed—why take chances with an installer who is not reputable, experienced, knowledgeable and carries certifications?
