One thing that almost always strikes me is the obvious differences in the quality of outdoor lighting systems installed in some homes in upscale neighborhoods. You spend so much time choosing the right brick or stone, trim colors, cabinets, flooring, counters, etc., wouldn’t you also invest in how your home looks at night? Why let it disappear after dark? Don’t beautiful homes deserve beautiful outdoor lighting? Not to mention the safety and security benefit derived from it as well.
One would expect in premium subdivisions of custom homes that at the least, each home would have professional outdoor lighting to highlight the architectural features and provide safety and security. Surprisingly, this is not always so.
Often, the homeowner expects that the landscaper who is installing the landscaping (and perhaps the irrigation and patio too) can go ahead and install an outdoor lighting system. And they probably can install something. Doesn’t mean they have been trained on how to design the system properly and you won’t have a light aimed directly in one of your windows. Doesn’t mean the landscaper has quality fixtures, or knows the proper techniques for installing a long-lasting system that keeps moisture out of the connections. Slap in 10 fixtures and a transformer and you’re good to go, right?
Or perhaps the homeowner decides he or she can do the outdoor lighting on their own. How hard can it be? Get a youtube video, and it’s all good, right? Maybe. Probably not. There’s really much more to consider than what first meets the eye. And again, if you are spending the money on a custom home, shouldn’t you have someone who is trained and certified to design and install your lights?
Cheap lighting might look okay and perform adequately for a short time, but it will never be breathtaking. It will never be showstopping. It will never bring your home to life and draw people’s eyes to it. It will not highlight the beauty in your home or your landscaping the way a professionally designed and installed system will. Understanding how light functions in space as well as the most ideal way to illuminate specific plants and surfaces requires training and experience. A professional landscape lighting designer can provide that, with beautiful results for you and your home!
Nobody likes to waste money. I understand that. But outdoor lighting is an investment in your home, and by hiring the right professional to do the job, you will be much happier than if you try to cut costs and find out there are corners that have been cut as well. A custom home just plain deserves custom professional outdoor lighting.
